Jacob’s Ladder

The Jacob’s Ladder symbol, with its alternating dark and light colors, was used to indicate a northward direction. According to these stories, quilts would be hung on fences, clotheslines, or windowsills at key locations (safe houses) to indicate to fugitives fleeing slavery where to go, that the place was safe, or what to do next.
