    About the Art Walk

This gallery explores themes of Black daily life, artistry, and excellence through featured works of celebrated artists, such as Savannah native Richard Law and Bahamian Maxwell Taylor. The strength, faith and perseverance of the Black community is painted through moments both from the past and present. Scenes of enslavement, today’s heroes, and strong emotions contribute to the spread and preservation of Black culture in artistic spaces.Along the gallery is a second exhibit space dedicated to Savannah’s Black history, highlighting the unique journey the city underwent during the Civil Rights movement and highly influential local figures and organizations. Westley Wallace Law was an essential Civil Rights leader for Savannah, and groups like the First Congregational Church were important centers of communication and mutual aid.

Vivid portrayals of the perilous journey of escaping enslavement through the Underground Railroad are filled with tension, courage, and determination. Celebration of Black strength, faith, and unity honor everyday heros who built safe cultural spaces in the face of adversity. Black artists collectively create a visual dialogue connecting historical struggle to modern perserverance, reminding viewers that art is not merely a reflection of history, but an active force that keeps memories alive.
